"Next Friday" received mixed reviews from critics upon its release. The film's comedic style and performances were generally praised, particularly the chemistry between Ice Cube and Mike Epps. However, some critics felt that it relied too heavily on crude humor and lacked the freshness and originality of its predecessor, "Friday." Despite the mixed critical reception, "Next Friday" performed well commercially.

It debuted at number one at the box office during its opening weekend and went on to gross over $57 million worldwide. The movie's success can be attributed to its popularity among fans of the original "Friday" film and its appeal to audiences seeking a lighthearted comedy experience. This success spawned a third “Friday” film: “Friday After Next”, released in 2002.

When I initially watched the trailer for this film, I assumed it would be terrible without Chris Tucker. I was mistaken. It's a pretty entertaining sequel, even though it’s not as good as the first one. Ice Cube is still great in this film, as are his cousin Day-Day and Uncle Elroy. The next-door neighbors on both sides are also wonderful. Even though the humor feels forced at some places, it was an enjoyable ride overall.

If you love “Friday”, you should definitely check out "Next Friday" because it serves as a direct sequel to the original film and maintains many of the same elements that made "Friday" popular. Both films are comedic portrayals of life in urban neighborhoods, focusing on a day-in-the-life narrative structure.

2. “Friday After Next” (2002)

  • IMDb: 5.8/10

  • Writers: Ice Cube, DJ Pooh
  • Stars: Ice Cube, Mike Epps, John Witherspoon
  • Duration: 1h 25m

As mentioned above, "Friday After Next", directed by Marcus Raboy and written by Ice Cube and DJ Pooh, is the third installment in the "Friday" film series. The film stars Ice Cube, Mike Epps, and John Witherspoon. The plot of this third “Friday” film follows Craig and Day-Day as they deal with Christmas-related shenanigans. "Friday After Next" takes place during the Christmas season and follows the misadventures of cousins Craig (Ice Cube) and Day-Day (Mike Epps) as they work as security guards in a strip mall.

On Christmas Eve, a thief dressed as Santa Claus breaks into their apartment and steals their Christmas presents, along with the rent money they were saving for their landlord, Ms. Pearly (Bebe Drake). Determined to catch the thief and recover their stolen items, Craig and Day-Day embark on a series of comedic encounters with eccentric characters and neighborhood hijinks.

"Friday After Next" was released to mixed reviews from critics. Some appreciated its comedic moments and the chemistry between the lead actors, Ice Cube and Mike Epps, while others felt that the film relied too heavily on slapstick humor and did not live up to the original "Friday." However, it's worth noting that the film has garnered a significant fan following despite the mixed critical response.

Despite the initial mixed reception, the movie performed moderately well at the box office. With a production budget of around $10 million, the film grossed approximately $33 million worldwide. While it didn't achieve blockbuster success, it still managed to turn a profit. The loyal fan base of the series, along with the holiday release timing, likely contributed to its commercial viability.

While this movie can’t compare to the first film in my eyes, I think it is a small improvement over the second one. The humor and comedy remain similar, although less forced and generally a touch too earnest. Overall, I’d say that this film is decent; it's predictable and a little contrived, but it's marginally better than its predecessor. The short-run time works to its advantage, since it does not drag on too long.

"Friday After Next" maintains the core elements that made the original "Friday" popular. It features the same lead characters, Craig and Day-Day, who find themselves in a series of humorous and absurd situations. The film retains the comedic tone, witty dialogue, and interactions with colorful characters that were prevalent in the first movie. Additionally, it continues the exploration of life in an urban neighborhood and the challenges faced by its inhabitants, albeit with a Christmas-themed twist.

3. "Barbershop" (2002)

  • IMDb rating: 6.3/10
  • Director: Tim Story
  • Writers: Mark Brown, Don D. Scott, Marshall Todd
  • Stars: Ice Cube, Cedric The Entertainer, Eve
  • Duration: 1h 42m

If you love comedy films exploring community dynamics, Barbershop is a must-watch. Like "Friday," "Barbershop" is set in a Black community and features a cast of colorful characters. The film centers around Calvin (Ice Cube), who inherits a barbershop from his father and has to decide whether to sell it or keep it running. This movie has plenty of laugh-out-loud moments but also touches on important themes such as gentrification and economic inequality.

The film primarily takes place over the course of a single day, during which Calvin contemplates selling the barbershop due to financial struggles. However, as the day unfolds, the barbershop becomes a lively hub of conversation, friendship, and community, with customers and barbers engaging in humorous and thought-provoking discussions on a wide range of topics.

The barbershop serves as a microcosm of the neighborhood, providing a platform for the characters to express their opinions, share personal stories, and engage in debates. The conversations touch upon various social and cultural issues, including race, politics, relationships, and the challenges faced by the African-American community. "Barbershop" was well received both critically and commercially. The film garnered positive reviews for its humor, social commentary, and ensemble cast performances.

Critics praised its ability to tackle important issues while maintaining an entertaining and light-hearted tone. Commercially, "Barbershop" was a success. It debuted at number one at the box office during its opening weekend and went on to gross over $75 million domestically against its $12 million budget. Its financial success led to the creation of multiple sequels and contributed to the establishment of the "Barbershop" franchise.

This was a good film, in my opinion. I laughed out loud at least twice, which is OK because this picture is primarily caustic rather than humorous. Cedric the Entertainer was fantastic, but he wasn't convincing as an elderly man. Ice Cube had a strong performance. He obviously broadens his acting range enough here to be considered seriously. And whomever the "Eve" persona originated from, she nailed it. There's a lot more to this film than Eddie's (Cedric) controversial lines.

It was interesting to see several black characters aware of, and worried about, black community issues. Both "Barbershop" and "Friday" lie in their exploration of community dynamics, character-driven storytelling, and their blend of humor and social commentary. Both films take place in predominantly African-American neighborhoods and feature ensemble casts portraying vibrant characters with distinct personalities. They showcase the interactions and conversations that occur within a specific community, offering slice-of-life comedies and exploring larger themes within the context of the neighborhood.

4. "Superbad" (2007)

  • IMDb rating: 7.6/10
  • Director: Greg Mottola
  • Writers: Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg
  • Stars: Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse
  • Duration: 1h 53m

"Superbad" was well received both critically and commercially. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised its humor, writing, and performances. It was particularly praised for its relatable depiction of teenage friendships and coming-of-age experiences. The chemistry between the main cast members, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, was also widely appreciated.

Critics appreciated the film's ability to balance raunchy humor with heartfelt moments and its authentic portrayal of the challenges and anxieties of adolescence. Commercially, "Superbad" was a success. The film grossed over $170 million worldwide against its $20 million budget. It resonated with audiences, particularly the target demographic of teenagers and young adults, who related to the characters' experiences and found humor in the film's raunchy and witty dialogue.

Source: IMDb

My impression after watching this film is that it is…super good. It is heartwarming, entertaining, and unpredictable. Jonah Hill and Michael Cera performed incredibly well and had wonderful chemistry. Emma Stone and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are fantastic too. Seth Rogen and Bill Hader are hilarious throughout, probably too hilarious because they sadly steal every scene even when they aren't intended to. None of these elements would have worked had it not been for Greg Mottola's excellent direction.

If you are looking for movies like Friday on Netflix then Superbad should definitely be on your watchlist. Both "Superbad" and "Friday" are comedies featuring witty dialogue and well-written comedic moments. They employ humor to engage the audience and explore various social dynamics and experiences. While the settings and specific themes differ, the comedic elements and relatable character interactions contribute to the appeal of both films.

5. "Boyz n the Hood" (1991)

  • IMDb rating: 6.6/10
  • Director: John Singleton
  • Writer: John Singleton
  • Stars: Cuba Gooding Jr., Laurence Fishburne, Hudhail Al-Amir
  • Duration: 1h 52m

"Boyz n the Hood" is a drama film released in 1991, written and directed by John Singleton. It is a coming-of-age drama that tackles many of the same issues as "Friday" but in a much more serious tone. The film follows three friends growing up in South Central Los Angeles and dealing with gang violence, police brutality, and other harsh realities of inner-city life. While it's definitely not a comedy, "Boyz n the Hood" is a powerful film that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

The film primarily focuses on Tre Styles (played by Cuba Gooding Jr.), who is sent to live with his strict father, Furious Styles (played by Laurence Fishburne), in an attempt to provide him with a stable and positive influence. Tre's friends include Doughboy (played by Ice Cube), Ricky Baker (played by Morris Chestnut), and Chris (played by Redge Green).

"Boyz n the Hood" explores themes of race, family, friendship, violence, and the struggle to escape the cycle of poverty and crime. The characters navigate the realities of their environment, facing societal pressures, gang influences, and the constant threat of violence. The film also delves into the complexities of their relationships, highlighting the challenges of growing up and finding a way to succeed in an environment where opportunities are limited.

"Boyz n the Hood" was received with critical acclaim upon its release. The film was praised for its authentic portrayal of life in South Central Los Angeles and its exploration of social issues such as poverty, violence, and systemic racism. The performances of the cast, particularly Laurence Fishburne and Cuba Gooding Jr., were widely acclaimed, as was John Singleton's direction and screenplay.

Commercially, "Boyz n the Hood" was also successful. Despite its relatively low budget, the film grossed over $57 million worldwide, surpassing expectations and demonstrating its broad appeal to audiences. In my opinion, this film has an antique beauty to it, and the fact that stars you'd recognize now look drastically different in 1991 adds to the sense. Laurence Fishburne, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Ice Cube are among the actors/celebrities. I was shocked at how everything in this picture came together and just worked.

The film does not take a neo-realistic approach, but it does weave together an unusual and frequently heartwarming narrative, terrific character development, and some truly amusing scenarios that keep your eyes glued to the screen. Though "Boyz n the Hood" and "Friday" have different tones and thematic elements, they both contribute to the African-American cinematic canon and shed light on different aspects of urban life.

They both address the challenges faced by their characters within their respective environments and explore the dynamics of friendship and community. If you loved the social commentary element in “Friday”, you’ll love “Boyz in the Hood”.

6. "Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood" (1996)

  • IMDB rating: 6.5/10
  • Director: Paris Barclay
  • Writers: Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Phil Beauman
  • Stars: Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans
  • Duration: 1h 29m

If you're looking for a movie that pokes fun at the tropes of urban dramas like "Boyz n the Hood," then "Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood" is the perfect choice. "Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood" is a parody of the "hood" genre of films that were popular at the time. The movie was directed by Paris Barclay and written by Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans, who also star in the film.

The story follows Ashtray (played by Shawn Wayans), a young man who moves to the crime-ridden neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles to live with his father. Throughout the film, Ashtray encounters a variety of comedic situations and interacts with colorful characters, parodying the conventions and stereotypes found in films set in urban communities.

Source: IMDb

"Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood" satirizes and exaggerates the themes and tropes commonly found in films such as "Boyz n the Hood," "Menace II Society," and "South Central." It presents a series of comedic sketches and spoofs popular scenes and characters from these films. The humor often relies on wordplay, sight gags, and absurd situations.

Critically, the film received mixed reviews. Some critics appreciated its humor and satirical take on the "hood" genre, finding it entertaining and amusing. The film's parody elements and comedic performances by the Wayans brothers were particularly praised by some reviewers. However, other critics felt that the film relied too heavily on crude and stereotypical jokes, lacking depth and substance.

Despite the mixed reception, "Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood" was a commercial success. With a modest budget of around $3.8 million, it went on to gross over $20 million at the box office, making it a profitable venture.

Source: IMDB

In my opinion, this film is highly underrated. It has to be one of the funniest comedies I've ever seen, taking a hilarious look at life in the 'hood'. It's a satire of dramas like 'Boys in the Hood,' and you might find it comparable to the 'Friday' series featuring Ice Cube (but funnier!). In this film, the Wayans brothers play Ash Tray and Loc Dog, who are both attempting to get out of the ghetto.

However, they meet many interesting individuals along the way, like 'Toothpick,' a tough regular jail goer (who is conflicted about his sexuality), Grandma, who rides in LoLo's, break-dancers, and fights with Ash Tray, and a woman with seven children. If you have watched several films with urban settings like Friday, then this film might just give you a breath of fresh air.

While "Friday" is more grounded in reality and tackles a broader range of themes, including community dynamics, personal growth, and urban life, "Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood" takes a satirical approach, parodying the tropes and clichés found in "hood" films. The more comedy films exploring community dynamics you have watched, the more hilarious this movie becomes.

7. "How High" (2001)

  • IMDb rating: 6.2/10
  • Director: Jesse Dylan
  • Writer: Dustin Lee Abraham
  • Stars: Method Man, Redman, Obba Babatundé
  • Duration: 1h 33m

"How High" is a comedy film released in 2001, directed by Jesse Dylan and written by Dustin Lee Abraham. The film stars rappers Method Man and Redman in the lead roles, along with a supporting cast that includes Mike Epps, Anna Maria Horsford, Fred Willard, and Obba Babatundé. The film has plenty of absurd humor and over-the-top characters, making it a great choice for fans of the wackier moments in "Friday."

The story revolves around two underachieving stoners named Silas (played by Method Man) and Jamal (played by Redman). After smoking marijuana grown from the ashes of their deceased friend, they discover that it gives them supernatural intelligence. With their newfound intellectual abilities, they enroll in Harvard University to achieve academic success and pursue their dreams.

As Silas and Jamal navigate the rigorous academic environment of Harvard, they bring their unconventional and laid-back approach to college life, creating humorous and chaotic situations. The film explores themes of friendship, personal growth, and the clash between their street-smart backgrounds and the highbrow world of academia. "How High" blends comedy with elements of fantasy and satire, often relying on marijuana-related humor and stoner culture references.

The film incorporates over-the-top and absurd scenarios to generate laughs, showcasing the comedic talents of Method Man and Redman. Commercially, the film performed moderately well. With a budget of around $20 million, it grossed over $31 million at the box office, making it a profitable venture. However, it didn't reach blockbuster status, and its success can be considered moderate in comparison to other comedies of its time.

Critically, the film received generally mixed reviews. It was criticized for relying heavily on marijuana-related humor and stoner culture stereotypes, with some reviewers finding the comedy repetitive and lacking in substance. The performances of Method Man and Redman were generally praised for their chemistry and comedic timing, however. Upon watching the movie, I got the impression that this film is a misunderstood and unique comedy that strives to exaggerate practically everything it does and depicts, resulting in lots of laughs along the way.

The two major characters, brilliantly performed by their actors, succeed at what they do and how they act, ensuring that the audience has a nice time. Its tale is ludicrous, to say the least, contradicting anything regular or even logical, yet that is precisely what makes it unique. It includes some drama and some emotion, but to be honest, you'll be watching it for the comedy. Both “How High” and “Friday” capture everyday life with humor and feature ensemble casts that showcase the dynamics of friendship and community.

However, there are notable differences between the two films. While "Friday" takes place in a residential neighborhood and focuses on a single day, "How High" takes a more fantastical approach by incorporating supernatural elements and the characters' enrollment in Harvard University. "Friday" has a more grounded and relatable portrayal of urban life, whereas "How High" delves into stoner culture and incorporates elements of fantasy.

I walked into the House Party without having seen the trailer. I'm glad I did since it took me on a wild roller coaster. Discovering the hook throughout the film was far more rewarding than seeing it in the teaser. I had a great time seeing this film. It's both amusing and amazing. Because comedy is subjective, this may not be suitable for everyone. Some folks will find it far too amusing. It's just what I was looking for. It's just the right amount of outrageous, which I enjoy.

I was laughing a lot and happy the rest of the time. There are so many great sequences and moments in this film. I laughed so hard at what I was witnessing that I shook my head. Both “Friday” and "House Party" were significant in capturing the spirit of African-American youth culture during their respective time periods. "House Party" represents the vibrant and energetic atmosphere of the late 1980s and early 1990s, particularly with its focus on hip-hop music and dance styles. "Friday" similarly captures the essence of urban communities and the experiences of its characters within that context.

  • Director: Tamra Davis

Like “Friday”, this film has become a notable part of stoner comedy culture and has maintained a strong following among fans of the genre. The plot of "Half Baked" follows four buddies, Thurgood (Dave Chappelle), Brian (Jim Breuer), Scarface (Guillermo Daz), and Kenny (Harland Williams), on their exploits.

Kenny gets jailed after mistakenly feeding a diabetic police horse marijuana-infused food. Thurgood and his buddies devise a plan to sell marijuana they stole from a pharmaceutical facility in order to obtain bail money. They meet a variety of odd personalities and find themselves in humorous and frequently absurd circumstances as they traverse the drug underground.

Upon its release, "Half Baked" received mostly negative reviews from critics. Many reviewers criticized the film for its crude humor, shallow plot, and reliance on stoner stereotypes. However, some appreciated the irreverent and over-the-top comedic style, as well as the performances of the cast, particularly Dave Chappelle. Over time, the film has gained a cult following, with fans of stoner comedies and Chappelle's comedy style finding enjoyment in its offbeat humor.

The film had a modest performance at the box office. It grossed approximately $17 million worldwide against an estimated production budget of $8 million. While it didn't achieve significant financial success during its theatrical run, the film has since found a dedicated audience through home video releases, streaming platforms, and its reputation as a cult classic.

To me, Half Baked is an underrated comedy flick. It's a film about potheads that doesn't take itself seriously and is very funny throughout. Dave Chapelle is really hilarious in the role and, in my opinion, is a greater lead comedy actor than Martin Lawrence or even Chris Rock. Guillermo Diaz is also excellent as Scarface. As the female lead, Rachel True is both attractive and competent.

This is not an Oscar-winning picture, but it is fun to watch with friends, and even after three viewings, it didn't get old for me. It has a humorous storyline, terrific comic directing, and good acting; it's worth seeing whether you like comedy, marijuana, or movies. If you love stoner comedy films with an urban setting like “Friday”, then “Half Baked” might just give you your much-needed dose of belly laughs. Like "Friday", “Half Baked” is known for its quotable lines and memorable characters. It features a mix of humor, wit, and absurdity, creating an entertaining experience for audiences seeking lighthearted comedy.

Upon its release, "The Wash" received mixed reviews from critics. While some appreciated the comedic chemistry between Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, as well as the film's lighthearted and humorous moments, others found it formulaic and lacking in depth. The film's reliance on crude humor and its predictable plot were some of the criticisms raised by reviewers. In terms of box office performance, the film didn't perform particularly well either.

It grossed approximately $10 million worldwide against an estimated production budget of $7 million. While it managed to recoup its production costs and generate some profits, it did not achieve significant commercial success.

I understand that many people may disagree with me, but I actually enjoyed this movie, and that’s why I recommend it to fans of “Friday”. Almost every part of this film had me chuckling, especially Slim Shady's performance as the mentally unstable prank caller. I couldn't stop laughing at everything. Some portions left me speechless, yet I couldn't help but chuckle. I like it and would watch it again and again.

Go into this film blind and don’t expect a masterpiece. Despite also being a piece-of-life comedy film like “Friday,” "The Wash" has a different storyline and setting. While "Friday" takes place in a neighborhood, "The Wash" focuses on the car wash business and the dynamics within that environment. The two films may share comedic elements and a similar vibe, but they have their distinct stories and characters.
