1. The Ugly Truth (2009)

The Ugly Truth (2009) - Movies Like 27 Dresses Source: Sony Pictures

  • IMDB rating: 6.4/10
  • Director: Robert Luketic
  • Writers: Nicole Eastman, Karen McCullah, Kirsten Smith
  • Stars: Katherine Heigl, Gerard Butler, Bree Turner
  • Duration: 1h 36m

How about we start with a movie that, just like 27 Dresses, stars Katherine Heigl as the lovelorn female protagonist? In The Ugly Truth, Katherine Heigl plays Abby Richter - a TV producer who remains hopelessly unmarried despite a lengthy and difficult quest for the right partner. When her employers hook her up with Mike Chadway (Gerard Butler), an opinionated TV star who aims to put Abby through the wringer to prove his own views about what makes men and women tick, the war of the sexes heats up.

Directed by Robert Luketic and written by Nicole Eastman, Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, The Ugly Truth was released in North America on July 24, 2009 by Columbia Pictures. The film debuted in third place at the box office (only after Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and the newly released G-Force) with $27,605,576 and the highest per-screen average in the top 10.

As of July 2, 2018, the film had grossed $88.9 million at North American domestic box office and $116.3 million abroad for a global total of $205.2 million, making it Katherine Heigl's second highest earning picture behind Knocked Up. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, The Ugly Truth topped the box office with £1.9 million in its opening weekend, beating out G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which came in second with £1.7 million. Those are some impressive numbers!

If you love rom-com movies like 27 Dresses, or are a fan of Katherine Heigl, then I definitely recommend The Ugly Truth. This movie is hilarious! I liked practically every second of it from beginning to end. It is actually intended for both men and women, with amazing perspectives on romance, sex, desire, and so on from both sides. The acting is good, the narrative is decent, and the on-screen chemistry between Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler is fantastic.

2. Bridesmaids (2011)

Bridesmaids (2011) - Movies Like 27 Dresses Source: Universal Pictures
  • IMDB rating: 6.8/10
  • Director: Paul Feig
  • Writers: Kristen Wiig, Annie Mumolo
  • Stars: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne
  • Duration: 2h 5m

Just like Jane in 27 Dresses, Annie (Kristen Wiig) is a single woman whose life is a shambles, but when she discovers that her lifelong best friend, Lillian (Maya Rudolph), is engaged, she is forced to act as a maid of honor. Despite being lovelorn and very impoverished, Annie threads her way through the bizarre and costly rituals linked with her profession as the bride's go-to gal. She guides Lillian and the other bridesmaids down the rough route to the wedding, determined to make everything perfect.

Directed by Paul Feig AND written by Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig, Bridesmaids instantly became a critical and commercial success when it debuted on May 13, 2011. The film grossed $26 million in its opening weekend and went on to bring in over $306 million worldwide, surpassing Knocked Up to become Apatow's highest-grossing effort to date. It has subsequently been hailed as one of the finest comedies of the 2010s and the twenty-first century.

Bridesmaids received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. It also earned several additional honors. In 2012, the film received Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress for Melissa McCarthy and Best Original Screenplay for Wiig and Mumolo, making Bridesmaids the first picture produced by Apatow to be nominated for an Academy Award.

This film came as a surprise for me when I first watched it. It is simply brilliant. Kristen Wiig is fantastic in her role. She carries this with tremendous skill and is at the top of her comedy game here, while also playing the emotional sections quite well. The supporting ensemble also does an equally good job. The pacing was excellent, there was not a single point in the film that took me out of it, which is a hallmark of a well-executed film.

The writing excels here as well, with Apatowian humour shining through. This film is similar to early Apatow flicks such as 30 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, but takes the comedy to the next level. It was a non-stop laughing riot! I suppose the biggest surprise here is that this is a film that can appeal to a wide range of audiences.Watch the trailer here:

A wedding movie just like 27 Dresses, Muriel’s Wedding is about the socially shy Muriel (played by Toni Collette), who wants to have a lavish wedding and better her personal life by migrating from her dead-end birthplace, the fictitious Porpoise Spit, to Sydney.

Directed by P. J. Hogan as his directorial debut, the film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 1994 and was distributed in Australia on September 29, 1994. After watching Muriel’s Wedding, I can see why Toni Collette is regarded as one of the finest actresses of this era. Her incredible acting skill is on full display in this splendid film. She's the kind of actress who disappears into her roles to the point where she's unrecognizable. In this role, she plays Muriel, an overweight, poorly dressed woman with low self-esteem who, in the process of discovering who she is, emerges as an attractive woman who understands what is essential and what she truly desires.

On top of Toni Collette’s excellent portrayal of Muriel, the script and direction of this movie were also on-point. I think of this film as a comedy, but the dramatic moments are also emotionally gripping. It's a strange, one-of-a-kind film with both style and substance. If you love wedding movies like 27 Dresses, then Muriel’s Wedding should be on your watch list.

Another wedding movie like 27 Dresses, My Big Fat Greek Wedding follows Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos)- a young Greek-American lady who falls in love with a non-Greek and attempts to convince her family to accept him while grappling with her ethnicity and cultural identity.

Directed by Joel Zwick and written by Nia Vardalos, the film was distributed by IFC Films in the United States on April 19, 2002, following its premiere at the American Film Market on February 22, 2002. It received favorable critical reviews and was a massive box office hit, grossing a total of $368.7 million worldwide against a budget of only $5 million.

At the 75th Academy Awards, My Big Fat Greek Wedding was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, as well as Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy for Vardalos. I think of My Big Fat Greek Wedding as a straightforward, hilarious romantic story that will most likely appeal to female audiences, which is a good thing. Vardalos' Oscar-nominated script was the trigger that placed the film on the map and maintained it there indefinitely. The film is well-paced and well-acted. The humor is, in my opinion, original and balanced. If heart, humor and romance are what you are looking for, My Big Fat Greek Wedding has those in buckets.

Interestingly, most of the extras are Vardalos' own family members, and Ian Gomez (who portrays Corbett's best buddy) is her real-life husband. Financially speaking, this movie is one of the greatest successes in the history of cinema, and you won’t fully understand why unless you watch it yourself.

5. How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (2003)

How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (2003) - Movies Like 27 Dresses Source: Paramount Pictures
  • IMDB rating: 6.4/10
  • Director: Donald Petrie
  • Writers: Michele Alexander, Jeannie Long, Kristen Buckley
  • Stars: Kate Hudson, Matthew McConaughey, Adam Goldberg
  • Duration: 1h 56m

Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson), an advice columnist, seeks to test the boundaries of what she can write about in her new piece about how to cause a man to leave you in 10 days. Lana (Bebe Neuwirth), her editor, likes it, and Andie rushes off to recruit a man for the experiment. Enter executive Ben Berry (Matthew McConaughey), who is so sure of his romantic abilities that he believes he can make any lady fall in love with him in ten days. Andie and Ben's preparations fail when they meet.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, a 2003 rom-com movie directed by Donald, is quite unique in that it is based on Michele Alexander and Jeannie Long's picture book of the same name, which has no storylines whatsoever, only a list of “don’ts”. Thus, the characters and plot were written specifically for the film. The film debuted on February 7, 2003, and grossed $23.8 million in its opening weekend. It ended up grossing a total of $105.8 million in the United States and $71.6 million worldwide.

It was the great comic timing and delightful performances by Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson that made this film for me. Of course, Hudson comes from comedic stock, and with Goldie Hawn as her mother, I would have been disappointed if she failed to meet the challenge, but she didn't. McConaughey also held his own and showed his talent for comedy.

As a battle of the sexes comedy, it doesn't get much better than this film. Again, the film follows a well-established formula, and I could see the plot’s ending from a mile away, but it is the route to this ultimate goal that I find interesting and unique.
