1. Gladiator (2000)

Gladiator (2000) - Movies Like Braveheart

  • IMDb rating: 8.5/10
  • Director: Ridley Scott

  • Duration: 2h 35m
Ridley Scott's epic masterpiece, "Gladiator," is an absolute must-watch for fans of Braveheart. Set in ancient Rome, the film stars Russell Crowe as the titular gladiator - Maximus Decimus Meridius.

In the grandeur of ancient Rome, General Maximus Decimus Meridius, a loyal and revered military commander, leads his army to victory against Germanic tribes, earning the respect of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. However, the aging emperor's unstable son, Commodus, driven by his thirst for power, murders his father and seizes the throne.

Maximus, betrayed and captured, is sold into slavery and forced to become a gladiator. His fighting skills and unwavering spirit soon earned him fame in the Colosseum, catching the attention of the Roman populace. Maximus yearns for revenge against Commodus, who has become a tyrant ruling with an iron fist. Guided by his unwavering sense of justice, Maximus rallies fellow gladiators and gains support from the people, turning his struggle into a symbol of hope for the oppressed.

Gladiator boasts a stellar cast, including the aforementioned Russell Crowe as Maximus, Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus, Connie Nielsen as Lucilla, and Oliver Reed as Proximo.

"Gladiator" was both a critical and commercial success. It received positive reviews for its gripping storytelling, stunning visuals, and strong performances. The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe, further solidifying its acclaim. In terms of its box office performance, "Gladiator" grossed over $187 million domestically in the United States and Canada. Internationally, the film earned an additional $269 million, resulting in a global box office total of approximately $457 million.

In my personal opinion, this movie is a poignant and engaging action epic starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix at their best. In this film, Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic. He's the type of villain you root for. So pitiful and foolish. So cunning and frightening. Just the proper amount of caricature. I felt like punching him in the face. It's silly at times and lags a little throughout the plot's escape scheme, but it contains enough emotion and horrific brutality to keep the audience engaged, which is what a good gladiator battle should be.

Like Braveheart, Gladiator showcases a fearless protagonist who becomes a symbol of hope, inspiring others to rise against tyranny. The film's breathtaking battle sequences, emotional depth, and stunning cinematography effectively capture the grandeur and brutality of ancient Rome. With a compelling narrative, powerful performances, and a poignant exploration of honor and sacrifice, Gladiator stands as a true companion to Braveheart.

2. The Last Samurai (2003)

Movies Like Braveheart - The Last Samurai (2003)

  • IMDb rating: 7.8/10
  • Director: Edward Zwick
  • Writers: John Logan, Edward Zwick, Marshall Herskovitz
  • Stars: Tom Cruise, Ken Watanabe, Billy Connolly
  • Duration: 2h 34m
For a captivating tale of honor, tradition, and personal redemption, The Last Samurai, directed by Edward Zwick, is a film that closely aligns with the spirit of Braveheart. Set in 19th-century Japan, the story revolves around Nathan Algren, a disillusioned American soldier who finds himself drawn to the samurai way of life.

The protagonist, Captain Nathan Algren, portrayed by Tom Cruise, is a former Civil War veteran haunted by his experiences and battling with alcoholism. Hired by the Japanese government to train their soldiers in Western military tactics, Algren is initially contemptuous of the traditional samurai warriors he encounters. However, during a battle against a rebellion led by samurai leader Katsumoto, played by Ken Watanabe, Algren is captured and held as a prisoner.

Immersed in the samurai culture, Algren begins to understand and appreciate their values, honor, and discipline. As he spends more time with Katsumoto and his clan, Algren forms a deep bond with them, questioning his own beliefs and embracing their way of life.

Upon its release in 2003, the film achieved significant commercial success, resonating with audiences around the world."The Last Samurai" grossed over $456 million globally. It earned approximately $111 million domestically in the United States and Canada, while the international box office contributed the majority of its earnings, totaling around $345 million.

Critically, The Last Samurai was also generally well-received, with critics lauding the film’s stunning cinematography, immersive production design, and detailed costumes. The battle sequences, especially the climactic battle at the end of the film, were lauded for their intensity and visual grandeur. Tom Cruise's performance as Captain Nathan Algren also received significant praise, with many reviewers noting his dedication and emotional depth in portraying a conflicted character on a transformative journey.

I can now say that this film has me after my third watch. I liked it when it was in theaters, I liked it much more the second time I saw it, and now I can only say that I adore it. The cast is outstanding. In this film, Tom Cruise is so terrific that it's easy to forget he's Tom Cruise. Since Jerry Maguire, this is easily his most powerful part and greatest performance. Ken Watanabe, on the other hand, is fantastic in every moment, playing with uncommon sensitivity and passion and pouring life into a character far larger and more human than the great drama of which he is a part.

Similar to Braveheart's William Wallace, Algren fights against oppressive forces while embracing a cause greater than himself. The Last Samurai offers breathtaking visuals, profound character development, and a poignant exploration of cultural clashes. It resonates with audiences seeking a narrative rooted in themes of honor, sacrifice, and the pursuit of one's true path.

3. 300 (2006)

Movies Like Braveheart - 300 (2006)

  • IMDb rating: 7.6/10
  • Director: Zack Snyder
  • Writers: Zack Snyder, Kurt Johnstad, Michael B. Gordon
  • Stars: Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, David Wenham
  • Duration: 1h 57m
Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, 300 brings the legendary Battle of Thermopylae to life in ancient Greece. Directed by Zack Snyder, the film portrays the valiant stand of King Leonidas and his 300 Spartan warriors against the vast Persian army.

The story is set in 480 BC, as the Persian Emperor Xerxes leads a massive invasion force to conquer Greece. King Leonidas I of Sparta, played by Gerard Butler, rallies his army of 300 Spartan warriors to defend their homeland. Determined to repel the overwhelming Persian forces, the Spartans hold their ground at the narrow coastal pass of Thermopylae, utilizing their superior combat skills and military tactics.

"300" was received with mixed reviews upon its release in 2006. The film was applauded for its visually striking aesthetic, with many praising the innovative use of CGI and green screen technology to create a stylized, graphic novel-inspired look. The film's highly stylized violence, slow-motion action sequences, and vivid color palette were often cited as highlights, contributing to its distinctive visual appeal.

In terms of its box office performance, "300" grossed over $456 million globally. Domestically, in the United States and Canada, the film earned approximately $210 million. Internationally, it garnered around $245 million, showcasing its strong appeal to a global audience.

I enjoyed this movie when I initially watched it, and it still holds up after several viewings. The cinematography is fantastic, and the combat and battle scenes are epic. Characters are memorable, with fantastic costumes, set designs, and CGI. A fantastic story. The Persian army's mystical features are very appealing to me. Just a wonderful action film that never goes out of style.

With its epic battles, charismatic leader rallying his troops, and a battle cry for freedom, 300 aligns closely with the spirit of Braveheart. Snyder's stylized visuals, memorable quotes, and breathtaking action sequences make 300 a visceral and visually stunning companion to Braveheart.

4. Apocalypto (2006)

Movies Like Braveheart - Apocalypto (2006)

  • IMDb rating: 7.8/10
  • Director: Mel Gibson
  • Writers: Mel Gibson, Farhad Safinia
  • Stars: Gerardo Taracena, Raoul Max Trujillo, Dalia Hernández
  • Duration: 1h 28m
Directed by Mel Gibson, Apocalypto immerses audiences in the heart of the ancient Mayan civilization on the brink of collapse. The film follows Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), a young hunter who fights against a ruthless Mayan empire to rescue his family.

Jaguar Paw is a young hunter and family man who lives in a peaceful Mayan village. Their idyllic existence is abruptly disrupted when a group of marauding warriors, led by Zero Wolf (Raoul Trujillo), attacks their village, taking captives for sacrificial rituals and enslaving others.

Separated from his pregnant wife and young son, Jaguar Paw manages to escape into the dense forest, embarking on a dangerous quest to rescue his family and ensure their survival. Pursued by the relentless Zero Wolf and his warriors, Jaguar Paw must rely on his wit, skills, and survival instincts to outmaneuver his enemies and overcome numerous perils in his path.

"Apocalypto" received generally positive reviews from critics upon its release in 2006. Critics lauded the technical aspects of the film, particularly its cinematography, production design, and use of practical effects. The lush visuals and attention to detail in recreating the ancient Mayan civilization were widely appreciated. Mel Gibson's direction was also commended for its ability to create tension and maintain a thrilling pace throughout the film. The performances of the cast, many of whom were indigenous actors, were also highly regarded.

In terms of box office numbers, "Apocalypto" performed moderately well at the box office, grossing approximately $120 million worldwide. In the United States and Canada, it earned around $50 million, while international markets contributed approximately $70 million to its overall revenue.

I think that his film demonstrates that Mel Gibson, the insane person, is a genius of sorts. Mel Gibson's Apocalypto demonstrates that a captivating action/adventure picture can be made in nearly any environment. Gibson's central argument is that all great civilizations die when they begin to decay from within. He delivers insights into the degeneracy of Mayan civilization on the eve of its confrontation with the Spanish conquistadores throughout the following 2 1/4 hours.

However, Apocalypto is not a political manifesto or a dissertation on why the Mayan era ended. Instead, it's a fast-paced adventure that culminates in one of the most exciting and lengthy chase sequences in modern film history.

With echoes of Braveheart's themes of sacrifice, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of liberty, Apocalypto showcases the indomitable spirit of survival. Gibson's film features breathtaking visuals, intense chase sequences, and a visceral storytelling style that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. If you crave an epic historical drama akin to Braveheart, Apocalypto delivers an unforgettable cinematic experience.

5. Brave (2012)

Movies Like Braveheart - Brave (2012)

  • IMDb rating: 7.1/10
  • Directors: Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman, Steve Purcell
  • Writers: Brenda Chapman, Mark Andrews, Steve Purcell
  • Stars: Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson
  • Duration: 1h 33m
Pixar's animated gem, Brave, directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, provides a unique but compelling connection to Braveheart. Set in the Scottish Highlands, the film centers around Merida, a spirited princess determined to shape her own destiny.

Merida, voiced by Kelly Macdonald, is a skilled archer and the daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor. However, she struggles to conform to the expectations placed upon her as a princess and faces the pressure of an arranged marriage. Determined to forge her own path, Merida encounters a magical, wish-granting witch and impulsively makes a wish that changes her fate.

The consequences of her wish lead to unexpected challenges, as she must confront her own mistakes and seek to mend a broken bond between her and her mother. As she ventures into the mystical and enchanted forests, Merida must rely on her bravery, wit, and archery skills to undo the curse and restore harmony to her kingdom.

"Brave" was generally well-received by both critics and audiences upon its release in 2012. The film was praised for its stunning animation, strong voice performances, and its refreshing take on a princess story. However, it also faced some criticism for its narrative structure and perceived missed potential.

Despite these criticisms, "Brave" performed remarkably well at the box office, grossing over $540 million worldwide. In the United States and Canada, it earned approximately $237 million, while international markets contributed approximately $303 million to its overall revenue. The film's strong international performance is indicative of its global popularity.

Like William Wallace, Merida defies societal expectations and stands up for what she believes in. Though Brave carries a lighter tone, it retains the spirit of courage, familial bonds, and the pursuit of individuality. The film's breathtaking animation, rich folklore, and strong-willed protagonist make it a captivating and poignant companion to Braveheart.

6. Henry V (1989)

Movies Like Braveheart - Henry V (1989)
  • IMDb rating: 7.5/10
  • Director: Kenneth Branagh
  • Writers: William Shakespeare, Kenneth Branagh
  • Stars: Kenneth Branagh, Derek Jacobi, Simon Shepherd
  • Duration: 2h 17m

"Henry V" is a historical drama film directed by Kenneth Branagh and released in 1989. It is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's play of the same name, which portrays the life and reign of King Henry V of England. The film showcases Henry's journey from a reckless prince to a legendary monarch, focusing on the events surrounding the Battle of Agincourt during the Hundred Years' War.

"Henry V" follows the young King Henry V as he assumes the throne and rallies his troops to embark on a military campaign against France. The film explores Henry's leadership, his relationships with his advisors and soldiers, and the challenges he faces as he confronts the French army. It culminates in the iconic Battle of Agincourt, where the English forces face overwhelming odds but emerge victorious.

"Henry V" received critical acclaim for its faithful adaptation of Shakespeare's play and Kenneth Branagh's direction and performance in the lead role. The film was praised for its epic scope, strong performances, and visually impressive battle sequences. It garnered multiple award nominations and won several accolades, including an Academy Award for Best Costume Design.

"Henry V" had a limited release and did not achieve significant commercial success at the box office. However, its critical acclaim and success in the festival circuit solidified Kenneth Branagh's reputation as a talented filmmaker.

This movie is, to my belief, an excellent return to Shakespeare's youthful King Henry by 28-year-old Branagh, who precisely fills the shoes Olivier strove so hard to fill 40 years ago. Branagh, who also directed the picture, brings it to life with thrilling battle sequences and a first-rate supporting ensemble that includes Shakespearean veteran Jacobi as the Chorus. Holm, Bannen, Brian Blessed, and Emma Thompson are also in the cast. The plot is told better and goes at a faster pace than earlier Shakespeare films. Would definitely recommend it.

Both "Henry V" and "Braveheart" are historical dramas that depict the struggles of iconic medieval figures. They explore themes of leadership, patriotism, and the challenges of warfare. However, they differ in their narrative focus and settings. "Braveheart" centers on the Scottish hero William Wallace and his fight for Scottish independence, while "Henry V" delves into the reign of King Henry V of England and his quest to reclaim French territories during the Hundred Years' War.

While both films showcase epic battles and feature characters who inspire their troops, "Henry V" is based on Shakespeare's play and has a more theatrical style, focusing on the psychological and moral dilemmas faced by the titular character. "Braveheart," on the other hand, emphasizes visceral action sequences and a more straightforward narrative of resistance and freedom.

In summary, "Henry V" is a critically acclaimed historical drama that adapts Shakespeare's play to depict the life of King Henry V of England. It received praise for its faithful adaptation, Kenneth Branagh's performance, and its epic scale. While sharing themes of leadership and warfare, it differs from "Braveheart" in its narrative focus and historical context.

7. Troy (2004)

Movies Like Braveheart - Troy (2004)
  • IMDb rating: 7.3/10
  • Director: Wolfgang Petersen
  • Writers: HomerDavid Benioff
  • Stars: Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom
  • Duration: 2h 43m

"Troy" is a historical epic film directed by Wolfgang Petersen and released in 2004. It is loosely based on the ancient Greek epic poem "The Iliad" by Homer, which recounts the events of the Trojan War. The film presents a fictionalized account of the war and the legendary battles fought between the Greeks and Trojans.

"Troy" follows the conflict between the kingdoms of Troy and Greece, ignited by the abduction of Helen, the wife of King Menelaus of Sparta, by Paris, a prince of Troy. In response, the Greeks, led by the warrior Achilles, assemble a massive army to besiege the city of Troy. The film explores the motivations, alliances, and rivalries of the key characters, including Achilles, Hector (Prince of Troy), and King Priam of Troy. It culminates in the epic and decisive Battle of Troy."

The movie received mixed to positive reviews from critics. The film was praised for its grand-scale battles, impressive production design, and strong performances from its ensemble cast, which includes Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, and Orlando Bloom. However, some critics felt that the film deviated from the source material and lacked the depth and complexity of Homer's original work. It nevertheless performed well at the box office, grossing over $490 million worldwide. Its commercial success can be attributed to its high production values, star-studded cast, and the enduring popularity of the Trojan War narrative.

I love this movie; it is one of my favorite R-rated movies like Braveheart and, in my view, one of the finest and most epic. The acting, the world-building, the character depth, and the pleasure of such a fantastic portrayal of the historical period. I didn't think it was possible to construct an account of the Trojan War without the supernatural presence of the Greek Gods that was as good as the traditional version, but this film does.

Both "Troy" and "Braveheart" are epic historical films that depict legendary battles and the clash of civilizations. They explore themes of honor, heroism, and the human cost of war. However, they differ in terms of their settings and historical context. "Braveheart" is set in medieval Scotland and revolves around the Scottish hero William Wallace's fight for independence against English rule. "Troy," on the other hand, is set in ancient Greece and focuses on the Trojan War, a conflict between the Greeks and Trojans.

While both films feature epic battle sequences and charismatic leaders, "Troy" draws from Greek mythology and showcases the legendary figures of Achilles and Hector, while "Braveheart" centers on the historical figure of William Wallace. Furthermore, "Troy" leans more towards a grand-scale spectacle with its lavish production design and visual effects, whereas "Braveheart" places a stronger emphasis on the personal journey of its protagonist and the resilience of the Scottish people.

In summary, "Troy" is a historical epic film that presents a fictionalized account of the Trojan War. It received mixed reviews from critics but achieved significant commercial success. While sharing themes of warfare and heroism, it differs from "Braveheart" in terms of setting, historical context, and narrative focus.

  • IMDb rating: 6.9/10
  • Director: Michael Caton-Jones
  • Writer: Alan Sharp
  • Stars: Liam Neeson, Jessica Lange, John Hurt
  • Duration: 2h 19m

Like Braveheart, "Rob Roy" tells the tale of a Scottish history figure. It is a historical drama film directed by Michael Caton-Jones and released in 1995. The movie is loosely based on the life of the Scottish folk hero Robert Roy MacGregor, who lived during the early 18th century. It tells the story of Rob Roy's struggle against a Scottish nobleman who wrongs him and his fight to protect his family and honor.

"Rob Roy" follows the eponymous character, played by Liam Neeson, a proud and respected Highlander who becomes entangled in a conflict with the Marquess of Montrose, Archibald Cunningham (played by Tim Roth). After being betrayed by Montrose, Rob Roy seeks justice and revenge while attempting to protect his wife Mary (Jessica Lange) and their family. The film explores themes of honor, loyalty, and the resilience of the Scottish people.

"Rob Roy" received positive reviews from critics, who praised the film for its strong performances, particularly Liam Neeson's portrayal of Rob Roy, and its authentic depiction of the Scottish Highlands. The film's dramatic intensity, compelling storytelling, and emotional depth resonated with audiences and critics alike.

Commercially, the film also performed moderately at the box office, grossing over $31 million worldwide. While it didn't achieve blockbuster status, its critical acclaim and word-of-mouth success contributed to its enduring reputation as a significant historical drama.

What can one say about a picture with one of the darkest, most nihilistic, and occasionally strangely - I won't say sympathetic - characters?I'll say the most 'charismatic' villains in cinema history, and the finest sword battle since Flynn and Fairbanks were at their peak? This is an epic about a man's battle for honor and freedom against tyranny, which is often stupid, but always heroic and honest. It was fantastic. Tim Roth and John Hurt were fantastic antagonists. Jessica Lange delivered an emotional, delicate, and seductive performance.

"Rob Roy" shares similarities with "Braveheart" in terms of its historical setting, Scottish backdrop, and themes of resistance against oppression. Both films portray Scottish heroes who are willing to sacrifice everything for their families, honor, and the freedom of their people. They showcase epic landscapes, medieval clashes, and explore the resilience of the Scottish spirit.

However, this movie differentiates itself from "Braveheart" in its narrative focus. While "Braveheart" primarily centers on the Scottish fight for independence and the figure of William Wallace, "Rob Roy" delves into the personal journey of Rob Roy MacGregor and his pursuit of justice and redemption within a smaller-scale, character-driven story. In summary, "Rob Roy" is a historical drama that presents a fictionalized account of the life of Scottish folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor. It received positive reviews for its strong performances and authentic portrayal of the Scottish Highlands. While sharing some thematic similarities with "Braveheart," it distinguishes itself through its focus on a specific protagonist's personal journey and his quest for justice and honor.

Movies Like Braveheart - The Patriot (2000)

  • IMDb rating: 7.2/10
  • Director: Roland Emmerich
  • Writer: Robert Rodat
  • Stars: Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, Joely Richardson
  • Duration: 2h 45m
"The Patriot" is a historical war film directed by Roland Emmerich and released in 2000. The movie is set during the American Revolutionary War and tells the story of a South Carolina farmer, Benjamin Martin, who becomes a reluctant hero and leader in the fight for American independence.

The plot of "The Patriot" follows Benjamin Martin, played by Mel Gibson, a widowed father of seven children who initially wishes to stay out of the war. However, when his family is directly affected by the brutality of British troops, he joins the Continental Army to seek revenge. Martin's military prowess and strategic skills make him a significant asset to the American forces. The film portrays the sacrifices he makes, the battles he fights, and the personal struggles he faces while striving for freedom.

Upon release, "The Patriot" received mixed reviews from critics. While some praised its action sequences, cinematography, and strong performances, others criticized it for its historical inaccuracies and oversimplification of complex events. Mel Gibson's portrayal of Benjamin Martin was widely appreciated for its intensity and emotional depth. The film found success with audiences, particularly in the United States, who were drawn to its patriotic themes and thrilling war scenes.

Despite the mixed reception, the movie was a commercial success, grossing over $215 million worldwide. Its box office performance can be attributed to its wide appeal, combining elements of historical drama, action, and a star-studded cast, including Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, and Jason Isaacs.

Personally, "The Patriot" was an incredible thrill ride for me. Hands down the finest Mel Gibson movies I've ever watched, with excellent performances from Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, and many more. The classic revolutionary war scenes and conflicts make this a fantastic action movie. It's also capped off with some incredible drama. The acting in this film was incredible, helping to make it the finest war film I've ever watched.

"The Patriot" shares similarities with "Braveheart" in terms of their historical settings, themes of resistance against oppression, and the depiction of a charismatic leader fighting for independence. Both films portray the struggles of a hero who takes up arms against a powerful enemy in the pursuit of freedom and justice. They showcase epic battle sequences, personal sacrifices, and the resilience of their respective nations.

However, there are notable differences between the two films. "The Patriot" focuses on the American Revolution, whereas "Braveheart" takes place during Scotland's fight for independence against English rule. Additionally, "The Patriot" incorporates family dynamics and explores the personal motivations of its protagonist, while "Braveheart" places a stronger emphasis on the national struggle and the larger historical context.

In summary, "The Patriot" is a historical war film set during the American Revolutionary War. It received mixed reviews from critics but found commercial success due to its thrilling action sequences and patriotic themes. While sharing thematic similarities with "Braveheart," it differentiates itself through its unique setting, historical context, and the exploration of family dynamics within the larger struggle for independence.

"Kingdom of Heaven" is a historical epic film directed by Ridley Scott and released in 2005. The movie is set during the Crusades of the 12th century and explores the clash between Christian and Muslim forces over control of Jerusalem.

"Kingdom of Heaven" received mixed to positive reviews from critics. While some praised its visually stunning cinematography, attention to historical detail, and thought-provoking themes, others found fault with the pacing and character development. The film's director's cut, released later, garnered more favorable reviews and was generally regarded as an improvement over the theatrical version.

The film had a moderate performance at the box office, grossing over $211 million worldwide. However, it faced stiff competition upon its release and did not achieve blockbuster success. Its reputation has grown over time, particularly with the director's cut release, which is highly regarded among fans of the film.

I saw the Director's Cut of this film, which is why I rate this movie very highly. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie, I’m confident that it is one of the finest medieval movies like Braveheart you can find. Sure, the film is lengthy, but trust me when I say it is well worth your time. Don't bother with the theatrical version; it's missing crucial minutes that the DC version has. So, basically, if there was a movie to acquire the DC instead of the standard cut for, it would be this one.

"Kingdom of Heaven" shares some thematic similarities with "Braveheart," such as the depiction of epic historical conflicts, the struggle for freedom, and the examination of religious and political tensions. Both films explore the complexities of war and showcase grand-scale battles.

However, there are notable differences between the two films.
